On Grid-Tied Solar Systems

Grid-tied, on-grid, utility-interactive, grid intertie and grid back-feeding are all terms used to describe the same concept – a solar system that is connected to the utility power grid.

Standard, grid-tied solar systems rely on the following components:

  • 1. Grid-Tie Inverter (GTI): This regulates the voltage and current received from your solar panels. Direct current (DC) from your solar panels is converted into alternating current (AC), which is required by most electrical appliances. Further, GTIs synchronize the phase and frequency of the current to fit the utility grid (nominally 60Hz) and therefore called as synchronous inverters. The output voltage is also adjusted to be slightly higher than the grid voltage in order for excess electricity to flow outwards to the grid.

Advantages of Grid-Tied Systems

  • A grid-connection will allow you to save more money with solar panels through better efficiency rates, net metering, plus lower equipment and installation costs.
  • Your solar panels will often generate more electricity than what you are capable of consuming. With net metering, homeowners can put this excess electricity onto the utility grid instead of storing it themselves with batteries.

On Grid Solar System with battery bank

The whole system mainly comprises of

  • Solar PV Module (SPV Array): Solar PV Modules generates DC electricity in proportion to the amount of sunlight available, generating the most power on a clear day when the sun is at a normal to the Solar PV Modules. These Solar PV Modules are connected in series and parallel to form a Solar Array based on the voltage required of the inverter selected.
  • Solar PV Module Mounting Structure: The Solar PV Array is mounted on the Module Mounting Structure (MMS) which are oriented towards the south and tilted at an angle which is optimum based on the latitude of the location.
  • HYBRID Inverter: The DC power produced from Solar Array is fed to a Solar grid connect inverter. The Grid connect Solar Inverter will convert DC to AC and supply the power to load and then battery and then excess power is export to the Utility Grid.

Off Grid Solar System

An off-the-grid or standalone solar system is one that is not tied to the grid and is ideal for those areas which do not have public grid access. The solar off-grid system converts sunlight into electricity without connecting to the local utility grids. Off-grid solar energy system includes storage solution such as batteries or flywheel energy storage which prevents excess electricity from getting wasted and be conserved instead for future use.

Components of an Off-Grid Solar System

  • Solar Charge Controller: Solar charge controllers are also known as charge regulators or battery regulators. Solar Battery Chargers limit the rate of current being delivered to the battery bank and protect the batteries from overcharging. Good charge controllers are crucial for keeping the batteries healthy, which ensures the lifetime of a battery bank is maximized. In regular lead-acid battery-based inverters, the charge controller is usually integrated.

  • Battery Bank: A battery bank is essentially a group of batteries wired together. It acts as a generator and ensures the system can be used even after sunset
